Random errors

From september 2015 upto november 2015 (after I had "dedusted" the interior of the laptop), the laptop started to behave crazy:
  • it goes into sleep mode at random moments (even while typing)
  • the keyboard doesn't react correctly (some keys won't work, other type different characters than the ones they are meant for, …)
  • websites open very, very slowly in all browsers (once opened, I can navigate around in them at normal speed)

On November 14th, suddenly everything works fine again and shortly after I notice that the system info mentions 4GB RAM instead of the 8GB RAM installed.

I open the machine, remove the RAM's, re-installs them "firmly", and since then everything works fine again!!!

Since the machine was 5 years old and behaved so strangely, I was looking for a new machine (ASUS N551VW or Dell XPS 9550), but now I suppose I'll upgrade it: the christmas period will be ideal to install an SSD drive and upgrade to Windows 10. Looking forward to it!

Blurry text in MMC and other windows

In Windows 8.1 this could be solved system wide following this tip: http://superuser.com/questions/643443/how-to-set-systemwide-xp-style-dpi-scaling-in-windows-8-1:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display: "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays"

But in Windows 10, this option has been removed.

The cause is the custom scaling level of 125% on small (15 inch), high resolution screens (HD, Full HD, higher), which doesn't work well for mmc windows etc.

I now have changed the scaling to 100% again, so everything looks fine now, but this only works for the 2nd screen (24 inch), not for the pc screen (15,6 inch).

Multiple Document folders appearing under "This PC"

System Image Backup

  • (Metro style: Settings > Backup > Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7))
  • Control Panel
  • File History
  • linksonder: System Image Backup

Tweaks

If the fan of the Dell Studio XPS 1647 is constantly spinning at top speed, try the following things:
  • in Chrome: go to chrome://settings/system and disable "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed"
more settings in Chrome you can play with: see chrome://flags/

Error code: 0xc0000102 - \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\WindowsTrustedRT.system

The operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors.

File: \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\WindowsTrustedRT.systemError code: 0xc0000102.

You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/device manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again.
Press F8 for Startup Settings

None of the available troubleshoot options solved the problem:
  • System Restore: none available (although, afterwards, in Windows, I saw two restore points!)
  • Startup Repair: started, but after reboot, the same error appeared
  • Uninstall Updates:
    • Uninstall latest quality update: done, but no result
    • Uninstall latest feature update: done, but no result
But I didn't have to reinstall Windows, because !RollBack Rx Home solved the problem.

KB4517389: installation fails: error 0x800706be

On Wednesday October 9th, the installation of the cumulative update KB4517389 fails with error code 0x800706be. Rolling back to the nearest Rollback Rx snapshot didn't solve the problem. However, when I rolled back to the snapshot of July 1st, and then executed all updates, everything went fine, including KB4517389.
