2. DELL Studio XPS 1647 (64-bit)

2.1 preparation (19/07/2018)

  • deauthorize Finale PrintMusic 2014
  • backup the WinSCP configuration: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Martin Prikryl\WinSCP 2

  • backup files, music, photos
  • PowerLine _boossy.be2.4 & vpn's Hostbasket & explio (C:\Users\sbo\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk)
  • administrative directories
  • TeamViewer
  • C:\Users\boossy
  • scheduled tasks: Samsung Magician
  • printer
  • google afmelden voor advertentiecookie
  • QTTabBar
  • Startup
    • Explorer.ahk, Google Update Core, Microsoft OneDrive, (Dell) QuickSet (C:), Samsung Rapid Mode Notification Utility, Windows Defender Notification icon

2.2 Execution (20/07/2018)

2.2.0 Reset

  • Reset this PC
  • Remove everything
  • het leuke is nu dat hij vraagt of hij alle drives dan wel alleen de drive met het besturingssysteem moet wissen:
Your PC has more than one drive
Do you want to remove all files from all drives?
Only the drive where Windows is installed
  • Do you want to clean the drives, too? Ik hou de PC en ga hem nog niet laten recycleren, dus ik kies gewoon Just remove my files
  • Ready to reset this PC? Reset

2.2.1 System

2.2.1.1 Computer name and workgroup settings

Computer name
  • Settings > System: About
  • In the Device specifications section, click on the Rename this PC button.
The workgroup settings are to be found in the good old Control Panel > System

2.2.1.2 System protection

  • enable System Restore, alo in the good old Control Panel > System: click on System protection
  • since System Restore is not always trustworthy, also install Rollback RX Home:
    • Locked snapshot WinX v1903 Setup van 31/05/2019 - al eens als test gebruikt op 04/06/2019 => OK
    • wijzigingen sinds de snapshot:
      • nieuw, gecombineerd WiFi-netwerk (boossy.be)
      • OneDriveWeb.vbs ipv OneDriveWeb.bat
      • advanced power settings: Sleep > Allow wake timers > On battery: Disable, Plugged in: Disable
      • DNS servers: 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 / 2606:4700:4700::1111 & 2606:4700:4700::1001

2.2.1.3 Allow Remote Desktop connections

  • And while we're in the good old Control Panel > System: Remote settings
  • click on the Remote tab, then choose Allow remote connections to this computer

2.2.2 Windows…

2.2.2.1 C:\Users\stijn > C:\Users\Stijn

Folder name

https://superuser.com/questions/949402/how-to-change-the-capitalization-of-the-user-folder-in-windows-10

Microsoft uses your Microsoft e-mail account (first.last@hotlook.com) to create a user under C:\Users (first), but without a capital. Grrr!!!
  • create a 2nd admin user: the GUI requires too much information (e.g. 3 security questions), so do it using an elevated command prompt:
    • net user 2ndadmin “2ndadmin” /add
    • net localgroup administrators “2ndadmin” /add
  • log off
  • log in as the 2nd admin user
  • command prompt (elevated): rename c:\users\stijn Stijn [be patient, can take some time - check in Explorer to see if the change has already taken place - kill the Command prompt if so...] - [bij v1903 was de wijziging meteen, geen geduld nodig...]
  • log off as the 2nd user
  • sign in with your original account
  • delete the 2nd admin user (simply with the metro style settings panel Accounts > Family & other users)
ATTENTION: I wouldn't change the name, only the capitalization, since Windows is case insensitive!
User variable %USERNAME%

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/cd35f292-616a-4622-96cb-19138a59d7e8/changing-username-variable?forum=win10itprogeneral

On september 25th, so two months after the installation, I notice stijn > Desktop in the Immersive Explorer .

You can change it in netplwiz (the Advanced User Accounts Control Panel): so open this control panel item, select the name you want to change and click on the Properties button.

Now you get the properties of the selected user account: you can change User name, Full name & Description.
Variable %USERPROFILE%

In PowerShell, you'll notice that still the name with a lowercase letter is shown.
  • regedit
  • go to: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<your profile>
  • change the ProfileImagePath expandable string value
  • restart

2.2.2.2 Small icons in the taskbar

https://www.howtogeek.com/225568/how-to-configure-and-customize-the-taskbar-in-windows-10/
  • right-click on any empty area of the taskbar en click "Settings"
  • turn on "Use small taskbar icons"

2.2.2.3 Hide the Windows 10 3D Objects folder

https://techhelpkb.com/hide-the-windows-10-3d-objects-folder/

By default, in Windows Explorer, This PC shows the following folders: 3D Objects, Desktop, Downloads, Music, OneDrive, Pictures & Videos. I like this classification, but I don't use 3D Objects at all, so I wanted to hide the 3D Objects (hide, not delete!):
  • regedit
  • Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{31C0DD25-9439-4F12-BF41-7FF4EDA38722}
  • open or create the (sub) key !PropertyBag
  • then, in the right pane, create a new String Value: ThisPCPolicy
  • give it the value Hide
  • restart
Of course, you can apply this to the other objects in This PC as well:

https://www.askvg.com/tip-remove-6-extra-folders-from-windows-10-explorer-this-pc/
  • Pictures: {0ddd015d-b06c-45d5-8c4c-f59713854639}
  • Videos: {35286a68-3c57-41a1-bbb1-0eae73d76c95}
  • Downloads: {7d83ee9b-2244-4e70-b1f5-5393042af1e4}
  • Music: {a0c69a99-21c8-4671-8703-7934162fcf1d}
  • Desktop: {B4BFCC3A-DB2C-424C-B029-7FE99A87C641}
  • Documents (sometimes disguised as OneDrive!!!): {f42ee2d3-909f-4907-8871-4c22fc0bf756}

2.2.2.4 Change Icons of Folders in This PC in Windows 10

It's also possible to change the icon of the various folders in This PC :

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/81222-change-icons-folders-pc-windows-10-a.html
  • Desktop Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B4BFCC3A-DB2C-424C-B029-7FE99A87C641}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183
  • Documents Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{d3162b92-9365-467a-956b-92703aca08af}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112
  • Downloads Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{088e3905-0323-4b02-9826-5d99428e115f}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-184
  • Music Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3dfdf296-dbec-4fb4-81d1-6a3438bcf4de}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-108
  • Pictures Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{24ad3ad4-a569-4530-98e1-ab02f9417aa8}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-113
  • Videos Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{f86fa3ab-70d2-4fc7-9c99-fcbf05467f3a}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-189
  • 3D Objects Folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0DB7E03F-FC29-4DC6-9020-FF41B59E513A}\DefaultIcon:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-198
So, local administrators have to become owner of the DefaultIcon Key (don't forget to check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects checkbox) with Full Control permissions in order to be able to change the icon.

Have a look at the icon index of .dll or .exe files: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iconsext.zip

This also is extremely useful, to get back a yellow icon on the taskbar for all Explorer folders. In Windows 10, if you choose one of the above folders, the (small) folder icon is shown on the taskbar, but is not recognizable as Explorer, since you have no yellowish icon… The icons differ if you choose Tiles-Content-XL-L-M versus S-List-Details! The smaller ones have no trace of yellow at all!!!

Get the Windows 8 icons back from here: https://winaero.com/request.php?1799.

Drop them in one of the following folders: C:\Users\Public, C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32.

2.2.2.5 Map a netwerk drive

Drive layout as of 29/05/2019 - get the info issuing the PowerShell command Get-PSDrive:
Name Root
C C:\
D \\PERGOLESI\h$\OneDrive
E E:\
G G:\
H H:\
O \\d.docs.live.net@SSl\DavWWWRoot…
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026635/windows-map-a-network-drive

I always think that I'll find the menu option to map a network drive under "Network" in Windows Explorer. Alas, this is not Microsoft's logic, you find it under This PC > Computer tab > Map network drive

2.2.2.6 Access a mapped network drive as if it were a local drive (fool your pc!)

Suppose you want to access your Music files in your OneDrive, but that these files aren't on your local drive: Now you can access your cloud music as if it were on a local drive…

2.2.2.7 Enable …

… administrative shares

See Win10DefaultAdminShares
… the execution of PowerShell scripts
set-executionpolicy unrestricted -Scope CurrentUser

2.2.2.8 VPN connection to eXplio

Go into Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections (the old Networking control panel, not the new one).

find the vpn connection and open it's Properties dialog.

On the Security tab make sure that "Allow these protocols" radio button is selected and that the Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2) checkbox is selected.

2.2.2.9 Set the correct language for you, the welcome screen login, default user, new users

Read Win10RegionAndLanguage in order to get this up and running the way you want!

Source: https://superuser.com/questions/948660/change-windows-7-8-10-system-language-welcome-screen-login-etc

2.2.2.10 System icons & icons on the taskbar

  • hide the power icon & the language bar
    • Settings > Personalization
    • choose Taskbar
    • go to Notification area and click on Turn system icons on or off
    • slide the Power slider to the left (Off)
    • slide the Input Indicator slider to the left (Off)
  • show the OneDrive icon on the taskbar
    • Settings > Personalization
    • choose Taskbar
    • go to Notification area and click on Select which icons appear on the taskbar
    • slide the Microsoft OneDrive slider to the right (On) (be aware that the program must be running, otherwise it won't appear in the list here)

2.2.3 Change the location of OneDrive & other default user folders

One thing I don't like about Windows, is that you can't choose a drive (letter) as the root of your OneDrive folder, it has to be a folder - why didn't they call it OneFolder then folder, it doesn't even look like a OneDrive (drive_network), more like TwoClouds (weather_clouds) Do I have a point or do I have a point (lightbulb)? So what I did, was:
  • change the default location of the OneDrive folder from C:\Users\Stijn\OneDrive to H:\OneDrive
  • hide drive H, since OneDrive is mentioned in the left panel of Windows Explorer as a root item (or map a network drive D, if you like…)

2.2.3.1 Change the location of your OneDrive folder

https://support.microsoft.com/nl-be/help/4028633/windows-10-change-the-location-of-your-onedrive-folder
  • click on the !OneDrive tray icon and choose, choose the three dots in the top right corner and then select Settings
  • click on the Account tab and click the Unlink this PC link (the Set up OneDrive screen is shown immediately after unlinking your account, simply ignore the screen)
  • then move simply move the OneDrive folder from C:\Users\You\OneDrive to e.g. D:* then return to the Set up OneDrive screen, follow the wizard, but pay attention to the This is your OneDrive folder screen: there you'll also have to change the location from C:\Users\User\OneDrive to D:\OneDrive
If you only keep part of your files offline, you can also see the other files from OneDrive in Windows Explorer by creating a mapped network drive:
net use o: https://d.docs.live.net/<cid> /user:<username> <password>

If you don't want your credentials to appear on the screen, you create a .vbs script with the same name, that calls the .bat, but this way, nothing is displayed on the screen.
Dim scriptName : scriptName = WScript.ScriptFullName
scriptName = Left(scriptName, Len(scriptName) - 4) & ".bat"
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell" )
 WshShell.Run chr(34) & scriptName & Chr(34), 0
 Set WshShell = Nothing

Put both files in your personal startup folder (%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup), disable the .bat (in Task Manager, Startup tab, right-click the .bat file and choose "Disable"), so that it's always automatically connected when you start Windows. Also be aware that it takes some 20 seconds after sign-in before the drive appears without the red cross, so be patiesn! If you do it through the Windows Explorer UI and choose 'reconnect at sign-in', you'll notice that you'll always be prompted to enter your user credentials.

2.2.3.2 Hide a drive

Method 1: using the Group Policy Editor (only for drives A B, C, D)

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/show-hide-a-drive-in-windows
  • now hide the D-drive using a Group Policy:
  • run gpedit.msc and navigate to User Config > Admin Templates > Win Components > File Explorer
  • in the right pane, click on the Hide these specified drives in My Computer setting
  • click on Enabled and choose the desired drive from the Options pane (e.g. Restrict D drive only)
Method 2: using the registry DWORD NoDrives (any drive)
  • run regedit
  • navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  • edit the !NoDrives DWORD value
  • you can get the required decimal value here: https://ss64.com/nt/syntax-nodrives.html
Please be aware that in both cases (method 1 & 2), the drive letter is simply hidden from Windows Explorer, but is perfectly accessible: if you type H:\ in the address bar, the contents will appear!

2.2.3.3 Change the location of Music & Pictures (OneDrive) & Videos (V-drive)

This is more straightforward:
  • rightclick the icon
  • click on he Location tab
  • click on the Move... button
  • choose the folder of your choice & click on OK
  • Answer Yes to the question if you want to move all files of the old location to the new location

2.2.4 Network

2.2.4.1 Show other Windows devices in your workgroup/domain …

In order to make the computers in your workgroup/domain visible to other (Windows) computers in you network, you have to change some settings in the services:
  • start the "Function Discovery Provider Host" service
  • start the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" service
  • set both services to Automatic (Delayed Start)
  • when you open Explorer Network, enable network discovery when you are prompted.
Source: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2106698-windows-10-pro-can-t-see-computers-on-my-network

2.2.4.2 … but hide devices attached to those devices

  • in File Explorer, go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center
  • in the left panel, click on Change advanced sharing settings
  • open the Private network profile
  • under Network discovery, uncheck Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices
  • click on Save changes

2.3 Install Office

I do have an official Office license. However, I never know where to find the URL of the installation. Well, it's here:

https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/install
  • by default it suggests the Dutch 32-bits version, but when you click on the Andere opties link, you get the possibility to choose another language and version, e.g. English and Office - 64-bits. You even have the possibility to download an offline installation program.

2.3.1 Custom Office Templates verplaatsen (29/05/2019: no longer needed???)

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/cannot-move-custom-office-templates-folder-in/e604f486-934d-4c75-b6fe-89f506f652ea

If you've read this far, you'll have noticed I'm a pezewever. So I don't like to have the Custom Office Templates under the root of my OneDrive drive/folder.

Move them as follows:
  • open Word
  • choose File > Options
  • in the Word Options screen, choose Advanced in the left pane
  • scroll down in the right pane to the General section and click on the File Locations... button
  • here you can change the location of the file type User templates

2.3.2 Excel: customize the Quick Access Toolbar

  • click on the Customize Quick Access Toolbar button (down pointing arrow) to the right of the already available commands in the title bar
  • choose More commands...
  • from the Popular Commands, choose Set Print Area, Print Preview and Print, and Paste Special...
  • OK

2.3.3 Language Accessory Pack voor Office

  • Office 2016
  • Nederlands
  • 64-bits

2.4 Browsers
