Windows 10 sleep issues

Laptop too often awake

Windows 10 v1709

Every morning, my laptop is "on" when I get up.

I now tried the following:

Task Scheduler accept

  • Task Scheduler (Local) > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Media Center
  • mcupdate_scheduled: Conditions: disable "Wake the computer to run this task"

Task Scheduler cross

  • Control Panel > Security & Maintenance > Automatic Maintenance: vink "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time" af, want volgens mij blijft de "MsOneDrive" vanaf 2u 's nachts (onterecht…) updaten dat het een lieve lust is en gaat de pc niet opnieuw in slaapstand

Windows 10 v1903

Check what causes the wake up

When you're pc has woken up and you didn't start it, don't restart it, but issue the following command:
powercfg -lastwake > lastwake.log

You will get something like:
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
 Wake Source Count - 1
 Wake Source [0]
 Type: Wake Timer
 Owner: [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (SystemEventsBroker)
Owner Supplied Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Universal Orchestrator Idle Start' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

So, here again, it's a scheduled task.

Two options:

Option 1: specific cross

In the scheduled task, disable the possibility to wake the computer.

In this case, this wasn't possible, because this task is owned by the SYSTEM service account.

Maybe I could change it to my own account, but since I no longer record TV programs through WMC, I no longer need wake timers (especially, since I found out my Surface 3 doesn't have any wake timers at all), so I decided to go for option 2:

Option 2: global accept

You can set your computer to never wake up:
  • Settings > System > Power & sleep
  • Additional power settings link
  • Change plan settings
  • Change advanced power settings
  • Sleep > Allow wake timers
    • On battery: Disable / Enable / Important Wake Timers Only
    • Plugged in: Disable / Enable / Important Wake Timers Only

The same article mentions how to check if there are still other wake timers:

In an elevated command prompt, issue:

powercfg -waketimers

And you get something like:

Timer set by [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (SystemEventsBroker) expires at 23:51:30 on 01/06/2019.
Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Universal Orchestrator Start' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.
Timer set by [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\StartMenuExperienceHost.exe expires at 23:51:30 on 01/06/2019.

Laptop won't go to sleep anymore

After I thoroughly cleaned my wireless keyboard and number pad, my laptop didn't want to go to sleep anymore.

Again, I issued the following command:

powercfg -lastwake

And the result was something with USB, so I immediately thought of the keyboard and number pad.

I uninstalled mouse and keyboard and booted again, to no avail.

When I took out the batteries and re-inserted them, the problem was solved, and my laptop went into sleep mode again.

Laptop won't go to sleep anymore (17/04/2020)

Shortly after I'd installed the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, my laptop didn't want to go into sleep anymore.

Once again, the Event Viewer showed Event 137, Kernel-Power:

The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S4). This can result in reduced resume performance.

So issue the powercfg command to check the last wake:

powercfg -lastwake > lastwake.log

This time, it's a USB device:

Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
  Wake Source Count - 1
  Wake Source [0]
    Type: Device
    Instance Path: USB\ROOT_HUB20\4&508a4ec&0
    Friendly Name:
    Description: USB Root Hub
    Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)

When I power off the mouse, the laptop goes into sleep again. I rolled back the laptop to a previous time (Rollback RX Home) and reinstalled the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center. Now, I can put the laptop into sleep. However, 11 updates are waiting to be downloaded, and I suspect one of these…:
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4484238) 64-bits versie
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3203462) 64-bits versie
  • 2020-04 Cumulatieve update voor op Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64 gebaseerde systemen (KB4549951)
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 (KB4484235) 64-bits versie
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Word 2010 (KB4484295) 64-bits versie
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Access 2010 (KB4464527) 64-bits versie
  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4484126) 64-bits versie

  • Beveiligingsupdate voor Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB4484285) 64-bits versie
Afterwards, I noticed that it was a hardware issue (Microsoft mouse) - to be elaborated later…
